Here's one lie that won't die...
"In order to lose fat, you must do isolated exercises to target that area."
For example, if you wanted to lose your belly, you'd be led to believe that you need to do tons of exercises that just target your abs or buy some silly ab belt.
But, here's the truth...
Isolated exercises are a waste of your time!
In fact, this lie is usually spread so you can buy that new gadget or fill up some spaces in that new ab attack class.
You see, doing isolated exercises will not help you burn fat as fast or effectively as doing compound exercises (movements that target multiple muscle groups).
Now, if you want to incorporate the most effective fat-burning exercises into your routine, here are some guidelines to follow:
Choose exercises that work multiple muscle groups at a time.
Choose exercises that require you to do them while standing, when possible. Or do the standing alternative of the exercise instead.
Put the hardest and most intense exercises first in your routine.
Now, here's the good news...
Doing workouts with exercises like this will allow you to work out less, but still burn more fat!
Here's why.
Performing a workout like this allows your whole body to be used. This will double the amount of calories you'll burn after a workout. Plus, the effectiveness and efficiency of this type of workout means you'll only have to work out 3 days a week (45 minutes or less).
This is a far shorter time commitment than the typical workout programs out there. Therefore, making it perfect for the normal, busy person to follow through and actually see results.
So here is an example of a workout you might create that follows the above guidelines:
Hindu Squats (Most intense first) - 10 reps
Hindu Pushups - 8 reps
Calf Raises - 10 reps
Decline Pushups - 8 reps
Stability Ball Jackknife - 15 reps
Back Extension on Ball - 15 reps
Ideally, you'd perform each pair (#1 & #2, #3 ) for a total of three times before moving onto the next pair.
As far as rest goes, you'd only rest after the second exercise in each pair.
Then you'd complete this strength-training portion of your routine with interval training. This will allow for maximum fat-loss.
Hope this helps.
